Weekend Music and Art- Haunted

If you have a couple of minutes, you might want to take a look at the incredible diversity in the work of Gianluca Nespoli.  He’s captured fantastically costumed people, flowers, insects, mimes… the Creative Moved photos are stunning–As are the Venice Carnival portraits.  Here are some that captured my attention, but there were so very many more.

I love Poe.  I’m more than ready for a new CD.  I love her in-your-face honesty, attitude and complete individuality.  If you listen to this song through, you’ll find that near the end, she projects an emotion that just might make you catch your breath.

Another of my favorites of hers.  This one is an actual video–gotta love You Tube!

About Rinda Elliott

Writer.I love unusual stories and credit growing up in a family of curious life-lovers who moved all over the country. Books and movies full of fantasy, science fiction and romance kept us amused, especially in some of the stranger places. For years, I tried to separate my darker side with my humorous and romantic one. I published short fiction, but things really started happening when I gave in and mixed it up. When not lost in fiction, I love making wine, collecting music, gaming and spending time with my husband and two children. I’m represented by Miriam Kriss of the Irene Goodman Agency.

  1. Oh! Poe is very good. Thanks for passing her on. 🙂

Heather, Someone has put all of Poe’s Haunted CD on You Tube. I had a hard time picking songs. You might like this one a lot, too.

    Oh and Walk the Walk!!

The story behind that CD is a good one. Supposed to go along with her brother’s book called House of Leaves.

Love Poe’s music, but why does she consistently have such bad videos? Same with Tori Amos. I just don’t understand. Have you seen the Hey Pretty vid? WTF, mate? This one starts out ok, but then completely loses the concept by the climax. C’mon Mark and Paul! Get it together! It makes me want to direct a good video for her.

Yes, Haunted does go with HoL. In fact, she lifts quite a few lyrics from is book. Or, he lifted quite a few lines from her lyrics. Either way, they do compliment one another. And maybe it’s just me, but sometimes that bro and sis have this creepy tone to their public relationship (the Hey Pretty video is a great example). Reminds me of Angelina and her brother.

But I feel like she’s one of the few female artists who actually presents an authentic female subjectivity. Pop is full of women who give into cliches of female art, only ever singing about men in a way that maintains male power, and the underground is full of women giving into cliches of feminist art, only ever singing about how they don’t give into cliches of patriarchy. But Poe, Tori Amos, old school Liz Phair, and a few others manage to create personal art that reflects the experience of women in a very real way.

I do wish she’d release another album.

This is the only video I’ve seen and yeah, it’s not great. But it gave me a glimpse of her in action. There was another live video on youtube that you might enjoy better.

Oh, old school Liz Phair!!! I did not like her last CD very much. And I’m an Amos fan, I even like that one CD I told you wasn’t my favorite of hers. I gave it another try.

I don’t understand what’s going on with her these days. If you explore her site, she has talking videos she’s putting onto Youtube–one that was kind of funny about a lion/dog… but I’d like to know if more music will come.

    (1) I’m just discovering YouTube and Metacafe for the first time. Lots of good documentaries on both.

    (2) I really enjoyed Nespoli’s depiction of the dancers. He’s really captured motion in a still shot.

  6. Rinda says:

The dancer shots are fantastic– I like the series a little further down, thought the ballroom dancers are pretty good, too.

X, YouTube is something else. I wasted two whole days on it the first time I really discovered it. But now, I can find just about anything on it for the blog when I have a particular artist or topic.

There’s a documentary on plastic surgery nightmares that includes the personal story of Pete Burns from Dead or Alive. Not for the faint of heart, that one.

  7. X. Dell says:

Yeah, I’ve seen the plastic surgeries one.

  8. I totally forgot about Poe after college. Thanks for helping me rediscover her! (And Tori….she’s a goddess…need to go dig out all my CD’s)
