Monday Poetry Train-Uncomfortably Numb

I’ll have to pull out a spooky poem next week.  This one called to me this week. 🙂

Uncomfortably Numb

Mind anesthetized.
Senses under siege.
Scent, touch, taste.
A life,
Wrapped in gauze.

Emotions once swelled.

Now loom out of reach.

In unrealized dreams.

Numb is not comfortable.

An endless recycling

Of gray,

With an under-smell

Of decomposition.

The yearn remains.

Burrows with sharp claws.

Thickens. Suffocates.

Until it consumes,

And blankets the sky in ash.

About Rinda Elliott

Writer.I love unusual stories and credit growing up in a family of curious life-lovers who moved all over the country. Books and movies full of fantasy, science fiction and romance kept us amused, especially in some of the stranger places. For years, I tried to separate my darker side with my humorous and romantic one. I published short fiction, but things really started happening when I gave in and mixed it up. When not lost in fiction, I love making wine, collecting music, gaming and spending time with my husband and two children. I’m represented by Miriam Kriss of the Irene Goodman Agency.

Wow! Our styles are so different! Your writing fascinates me. I especially like these lines:

    “With an under-smell
    Of decomposition.”

  2. Sparky Duck says:

Now this one really hit me. Numb can be a nice feeling, but it is not usually too comfortable and you showed that.

  3. rhian says:

oh wow Rinda! This one kicks ass. Love these lines:
    “Now loom out of reach.
    In unrealized dreams.
    Numb is not comfortable.”

  4. Lisa Andel says:

Actually, I rather like numb. Then again, I lack a sense of smell.
Your poem makes me take another look at my preferences.

  5. That endless recycling of gray reached out to me.

  6. The title reminded me of a Pink Floyd song. *wg* Love this one. Reminds me of how I’ve been feeling for the past several months.

  7. Rinda says:

It reminded me of Pink Floyd, too. In fact, I was thinking of the song and realized that numb is not comfortable. Not when you’re a writer and need that color and emotion. 🙂

Thanks for the kind word, everyone. 🙂

  8. stak says:

anthropomorphing “the yearn” is sheer genius……..well done!…..
